Mettler-Toledo vs. Budget Instruments: When Premium Precision Is Worth It (and When It Isn't)

If the consequence of a wrong reading is "we'll re-measure with the good instrument," the budget tool isn't just acceptable—it's the right financial call. Our maintenance team still uses the Extech EX330 daily, and it's been a solid purchase.

When in doubt, rent the premium instrument first. For any instrument above $5,000, rent it for a month before committing. It costs a fraction of the purchase price. Look at the calibration data, the documentation, the operator feedback, and the workflow impact. Then run the TCO numbers with real data instead of assumptions.

One more note on the procurement side: our policy now requires quotes from at least three vendors for any instrument above $2,000. For everything else? The $80 multimeter works fine.
