1. What's the Difference Between Mettler-Toledo Pipettes and Eppendorf Pipettes?
Both are air-displacement pipettes, which means they use an air cushion between the tip and the piston. The technique you need is nearly identical. Mettler-Toledo's pipette line is mostly sold under the Rainin name, so when someone says 'Mettler Toledo pipette,' they usually mean a Rainin LTS. Eppendorf is the other workhorse you see in every lab.
The differences are in feel, tip locking mechanism, and serviceability. Eppendorf tips are standard and widely available. Rainin LTS uses a lower tip ejection force, which makes a difference if you're pipetting all day. But I've used both, and I would not call one dramatically more accurate if they're both calibrated correctly.
What matters is this: choose the system you can get tips and service for, and don't assume a more expensive pipette is more accurate. Accuracy depends on calibration, operator technique, and tip quality. The brand does not forgive bad technique.
2. How to Use an Eppendorf Pipette Correctly
If you've ever learned the 'first stop, second stop' method from another lab, you probably know the basics. Let me repeat it anyway, because this is where most errors start.
- Set the volume using the thumb wheel or digital adjuster.
- Push a pipette tip on firmly--do not rock or rotate the shaft, especially with larger tips.
- Press the button down to the first stop. This is the aspirating position.
- Hold the pipette vertically and dip the tip into the liquid, only about 2-3 mm deep.
- Release the button slowly. If you let it snap up, you'll get bubbles and lose accuracy.
- Wait one or two seconds, then withdraw the tip.
- To dispense, press to the first stop, pause, then press to the second stop to blow out the remaining liquid.
- Release the button and eject the tip.
Use the forward technique for aqueous samples, and the reverse technique for viscous or foaming liquids. The same steps apply to Mettler-Toledo Rainin pipettes, though the tip ejection force is lower. And if you use an Eppendorf pipette with mismatched generic tips, it's a gamble. Some fit; many don't seal at all volumes.
3. Is the Mettler-Toledo SevenEasy pH Meter Still Worth Using?
Yes, for the right job. The SevenEasy is not flashy. It's a simple pH meter that doesn't have a bunch of menu layers, and that's exactly why a lot of labs keep it on the bench. As of early 2025, I still see S20 SevenEasy units in active use, mostly in teaching labs and production areas--or rather, in labs that need a reliable pH reading without logging every measurement. At least, that's been my experience with labs that don't need compliance data.
It measures pH and millivolts, and it has automatic buffer recognition. That's about it. If you need data logging, sample IDs, or more advanced diagnostics, you'd be better off with a newer model like the SevenDirect series. But if you need a straightforward, no-nonsense meter and you don't want to fight with software, the SevenEasy is not a bad purchase.
What I tell clients is this: buy the electrode that matches your sample. The meter is only half the system. A cracked or dried-out electrode will make any meter look bad. Check whether the electrode is refillable, store it in storage solution, and calibrate with fresh buffer.
4. What Should I Look for in a Multimeter Kit?
Mettler-Toledo doesn't make multimeters, so this answer is from field experience, not from our product line. A good multimeter kit is about more than the meter itself. You want a real CAT rating, a current jack that is fused, replaceable leads, and enough ranges for the work you actually do.
Ignore the 'high accuracy' marketing. FTC advertising guidelines require claims to be substantiated, but that doesn't stop labels from saying 'high precision' without a spec. Look for the actual percent accuracy on the voltage and resistance ranges. A typical decent multimeter is around 0.5%-1% DC accuracy. If it says 0.0001% on a $30 meter, that's a red flag.
Also check what's in the kit. Many kits include a thermocouple, a pair of leads, and a storage case. That's useful. But the most important feature is the safety rating. For industrial work, buy a meter with a CAT III or CAT IV rating if you'll be measuring mains or panels. A meter without a fuse on the current jack is not a multimeter kit; it's a potential fire hazard.
5. How Do I Set Up a Dial Indicator with Magnetic Base?
Another non-Mettler-Toledo item, but I've used one on machine alignments often enough. Set-up takes five minutes, and most errors come from rushing the mounting.
- Clean the ferrous surface where the magnetic base will sit. Tiny chips under the base ruin stability.
- Turn the magnetic base switch to 'on' and confirm it's locked to the surface. Try to move it by hand.
- Adjust the arm joints, but do not loosen them fully. You want them tight enough to hold position but loose enough to move slowly.
- Mount the dial indicator so its spindle is perpendicular to the part you're measuring.
- Bring the spindle into contact with the surface, then preload it by 0.5 mm or so. This gives you travel in both directions.
- Set the dial to zero, then move the part or the base to read runout.
A magnetic base labeled '80 lb' is fine for a small indicator, but if you mount the indicator sideways on a horizontal arm, weight and leverage work against you. In my experience, a shaky magnetic base is the number one cause of false readings.
6. How Important Is Calibration for Mettler-Toledo Instruments?
It's more important than which brand you buy. Mettler-Toledo instruments hold calibration well, but they aren't permanently accurate. A pipette drifts as the seals wear. A pH electrode ages. A balance gets knocked around. If you don't verify performance, the Mettler-Toledo name doesn't save you.
For pipettes, the reference is ISO 8655: gravimetric check using distilled water and a balance. For pH meters, calibrate daily or before each series of measurements with at least two buffers. For balances, use a calibration weight and check it before critical work.
I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included?' before asking 'what's the price?' when buying calibration. A quote that says 'calibration included' but doesn't name the standard, the accredited lab, or the traceability is not transparent. The vendor who lists those details upfront usually costs less in the end.
7. Can I Get a Mettler-Toledo Instrument on a Rush Order?
Yes, but only if you ask the right questions. In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before a QC audit because their SevenEasy electrode was cracked. We arranged an overnight InLab electrode, paid $80 in freight on top of the $350 electrode cost, and they passed the audit. Their alternative was explaining an inactive pH meter to the auditor, which would have been far worse. The upside was an $80 freight bill; the risk was a failed audit. It was an easy call.
Here's what you need to know: 'rush' in this industry usually means shipping, not calibration. A stock pipette can ship today, but if it needs a calibration certificate and a full performance check, that takes time. When I'm triaging a rush order, the first question is always 'does it have to be calibrated before delivery?'
If you're up against a deadline, ask for the final price with expedited fees listed. Then add a 48-hour buffer. It costs more, but it's way cheaper than a failed audit or a shutdown production line. Take it from someone who's done 200+ rush jobs--the unexpected problem is always the one you didn't ask about.
